"As an artist, I am keenly aware of the necessity and the urgency of freedom of speech — walking that tightrope between free expression and its consequences." Hicks comments on an edgy character she calls "Gertie", who is part of the upcoming show MOTHER LOVE. "You look at a show called MOTHER LOVE and maybe you expect sentimentality and nostalgia. MOTHER LOVE is definitely a celebration of Mothers. "But I try to capture my characters in a defining moment when they must dare to speak out loud what 'cannot be said.' And Gertie goes beyond that. She's a controversial," Hicks says,"but her voice is extremely important. The last line of her monologue captures it all. "Even though it's so easy to say she's 'the other', Gertie reflects us back onto ourselves – that's what makes her uncomfortable to watch. But we need her voice, her bald truth. And we need to love her and embrace her because she shares with all of us -- being human and being alive. "Nurturing a variety of voices makes our society and our world stronger, more resilient, more vibrant and creative. MOTHER LOVE also features musician Anna Lumiere singing an original song in tribute to her mother, as well as a collection of songs remembering Gord Halloran's mother.
