performance MOTHER LOVE

Thyinking about Mothers Day? The following interesting message is from BC actor/author Caitlin Hicks.

MOTHER LOVE

"A woman's issues of soul cannot be treated by carving her into a more acceptable form as defined by an unconscious culture . . ."
Clarissa Pinkola Estes – Women Who Run with the Wolves

"In order for change to take place, the culture must be aware of the change that is needed. Stories educate and inform the expectations of a culture," comments Caitlin Hicks, who has written the script of MOTHER LOVE.

"As an artist, I am keenly aware of the necessity and the urgency of freedom of speech — walking that tightrope between free expression and its consequences." Hicks comments on an edgy character she calls "Gertie", who is part of the upcoming show MOTHER LOVE.

"You look at a show called MOTHER LOVE and maybe you expect sentimentality and nostalgia. MOTHER LOVE is definitely a celebration of Mothers.

"But I try to capture my characters in a defining moment when they must dare to speak out loud what 'cannot be said.'  And Gertie goes beyond that. She's a controversial," Hicks says,"but her voice is extremely important. The last line of her monologue captures it all.

"Even though it's so easy to say she's 'the other', Gertie reflects us back onto ourselves – that's what makes her uncomfortable to watch. But we need her voice, her bald truth. And we need to love her and embrace her because she shares with all of us -- being human and being alive.

"Nurturing a variety of voices makes our society and our world stronger, more resilient, more vibrant and creative.

MOTHER LOVE also features musician Anna Lumiere singing an original song in tribute to her mother, as well as a collection of songs remembering Gord Halloran's mother.

The Olympia Writing Center

This may be of interest. It sounds ambitious, useful, & enjoyable.

Ongoing writing workshops and language classes in Olympia, Washington, as part of the Olympia Writing Center will begin August 3 of this year!

Modeled as one-third Seattle's Hugo House, one-third Port Townsend Writers' Conference (think Birkenstock-and-Volvo vibe), and one-third cross-cultural pollination of the kind Kahini is famous for, the Olympia Writing Center will offer evening and Saturday courses in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, cross-genre work, and language acquisition, as well as hosting a vibrant readings and performances scene.

A major part of this Center will be providing free English-language courses, resume-writing, job interviewing skills, and many other aspects of the writing life for refugee, migrant, and marginalized communities.

While many people are stepping up to offer their skills, if you have skills in this area and are willing to teach them in the Olympia area, please get in touch.

A key aspect of this Center will also be the inclusion of the tremendous diversity of Latin-American voices, cultures, and rich literary traditions of Latin America from the U.S. to México to Chile, as faculty and participants. In addition, thanks to strong relationships with Native Puget Sound communities, many workshops, performances, and other events will be planned, staffed, and guided by Native faculty. Stay tuned for more information!

To accomplish all this, we at Kahini are spending the next three months building the infrastructure for this Center. Offices are donating furniture, local bookstores are donating their classroom space and over 50 people have now made significant donations. Please consider joining us by becoming a member--even if you don't live in the Olympia area, your assistance transforms lives through the art of creative writing.

Thanks for all you do!
