writing opportunities March 25, 2014

I don’t know anything about the following but they could be worth investigating if you’re into their kinds of things.

Neutrons Protons, a monthly journal of creative nonfiction; the editors seek "your McSweeney's rejects."

TAYO, which looks for "writing that knifes, lifts, and strikes at the emotive truth of all things lost and adrift."

new Catholic publisher & book about writing

A fairly new Catholic publisher is Milwaukee-based Wiseblood Books: http://www.wisebloodbooks.com/. They’re not open to queries now but could be later. They publish new editions of classics, also previously unpublished books. One of the latter is THE CATHOLIC WRITER TODAY by Dana Gioia, http://www.wisebloodbooks.com/dana-gioia.html [thin book, price $5]. One reviewer says “It sets a mighty finger on the scales of literature: on the one side what matters and lasts, and on the other what’s shallow and doesn’t....Its arguments about Catholic literature could be applied to American writing in general.” I guess we may assume they also apply to Canadian writing.

bad reviews for novels

Getting bad reviews for your novel? The novels mentioned in the following article by Sean Hutchinson are ranked among the greatest of the 20th century though some early reviewers didn’t like them: http://mentalfloss.com/article/55592/really-harsh-early-reviews-20-classic-20th-century-novels. Maybe they’re wrong about yours too.

writers' trip to Israel

I don’t know anything about this, sounds intriguing.

TRIP TO ISRAEL FOR TRAVEL WRITERS, STORY RESEARCHERS, MEMOIR WRITERS - NOVEMBER 9-18, 2014

Give yourself writing input that will last for years. Think winding mountain passes, palm fronds rattling in the breeze, whitecaps winking from the cerulean Mediterranean. Wonder at ancient stones beside houses with roof-top water tanks, gardens and satellite dishes. Delight in the sensory overload of outdoor markets, haunting calls to prayer, breakfast buffets in four-star hotels. Pilgrimage... Writing retreat... Holiday... Whatever you call it, make 2014 the year you take it.
