The Joy of Prayer

Deadline for story summaries is May 7, 2023!

Submissions or questions should be sent to:
Guideposts

Guideposts is seeking submissions for an upcoming special interest publication called The Joy of Prayer. This will be a keepsake edition, printed in a large-size full-color format, like Guideposts' beloved The Joys of Christmas.

Concept
If prayer isn't already part of your daily routine, we know you'd like it to be. Let Guideposts help put you on a path to a more robust connection with God, not only during the time you set aside for formal worship, but also while you go about the business of everyday life. God is always listening and communicating in ways you may find surprising. How to feel his constant comfort? Find it in the pages of this special edition, full of visual expressions of God's presence in the world around us, as well as stories from people who have experienced the blessings that come when prayer comes first.

Requirements
Each story should be a true, first-person account of between 500 and 1,800 words. Stories can be your own or written for someone else. Stories must be original and never-before published. Please see below for details.

Story themes
• Stories of answered prayers while facing a challenge that feels hopeless
• Accepting God's answer to prayer when it wasn't what you asked for
• Examples of how prayers of gratitude can change a difficult circumstance for the better
• Waiting on God to respond and having patience when answers aren't immediately revealed; living with uncertainty
• Miraculous answers to prayers for healing
• Stories illustrating the life-changing power of prayer
• Praying for forgiveness or praying to forgive someone else when it feels impossible
• Stories about overcoming everyday disappointments through prayer
• God is always listening and communicating, perhaps in surprising ways
• The blessings that come when prayer comes first; on developing a practice of prayer
• Hearing an answer to prayer that comes in an unexpected way

What to submit
Submit a short (3- to 5-paragraph) summary of your story. The summary should include an outline of the narrative arc of the story, including information about the answered prayer and how the narrator was changed by it. We'll review your summary and let you know if we want you to go ahead and write the full story.

Payment on acceptance of story
Rates will vary depending on the length of the published story. We will pay $200 per page that is printed in The Joy of Prayer.

Deadline for submission of summary May 7

Notification of acceptance of summary May 22

We will contact only authors whose summaries are accepted. Please be prepared to turn in a draft of the story within one month of acceptance of summary. Acceptance of summary does not guarantee acceptance of story.

delicious French dessert: clafoutis

In French, clafoutis is pronounced klah-foo-TEE. English-speaking people often say klah-FOO-tee. I read several recipes, then made my own version. Here it is:

Ingredients

3 eggs

½ cup sugar

½ cup flour [regular all-purpose flour or gluten-free flour]

1 cup milk

½ cup light cream

¼ teaspoon salt

grated rind or zest of one lemon [optional]

1 teaspoon vanilla

3 apples

2 tablespoons butter, melted

cinnamon to taste

Method

1] In a bowl, whisk eggs till they're well mixed.

2] Whisk sugar and flour into the eggs.

3] Add milk, cream, vanilla, and lemon zest. Whisk until well mixed with no lumps. Set in refrigerator.

4] Peel, core, and slice apples. Arrange in an 11-inch flan pan or similar.

5] Pour melted butter over.

6] Microwave until apples are almost tender, about 5 minutes. [If using a metal pan, bake in oven until almost tender.]

7] Sprinkle with cinnamon.

8] Briefly re-whisk the batter in the bowl and pour it over the apples.

9] Bake at 400°F for 20 minutes. Then bake at 350°F until a knife stuck into the centre comes out clean or almost clean, about 30 minutes.

Variations

If you want it dairy-free, use almond milk or similar instead of regular milk and cream. Also use margarine instead of butter.

Traditional clafoutis is made with pitted black cherries. Other fruits can be used, for example, pears, peaches, apricots, plums. If using a soft fruit, don't microwave or bake it before pouring the batter over. If the fruit is quite sour, as plums can be, increase the sugar.
