unwanted symbols when keyboarding

Occasionally I accidentally hit a wrong key combination on my computer keyboard. As a result, I used to get inappropriate unwanted symbols instead of question marks,  apostrophes, @, etc. I think I fixed that [working in Microsoft Word 7]. I went to: 1 Control Panel, 2 Regions and Languages, 3 Keyboards and Languages, 4 Change Keyboards, 5 Advanced Key Settings. There I saw a chart of Actions and Key Sequences. I changed all the key sequences to NONE, then clicked OK.
