Author/photographer Murphy Shewchuk did a super presentation at the (Kamloops-based) Interior Authors Group meeting last night. He spoke completely without notes. (I wish I could.) I learned a lot from his experiences in selling his writing & photography in various ways. He’s the author of many many articles for magazines including BC OUTDOORS & of books available at Chapters Indigo http://tinyurl.com/ya5t3c57 , Amazon http://tinyurl.com/ybw8tqxt , & elsewhere. I was particularly interested in his tips for taking photographs. Here are just a few:
-You get the best outdoor light before & after the 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM period.
-Don’t always stand on the level & photograph what’s ahead of you. If possible, get up higher than what you’re photographing. Or get lower. An example: Murphy told us about shooting wildflower pictures at dawn while lying with his ear on the ground.
-Don’t have the horizon in the middle of your picture. Preferably have it about a third of the way from the top, or a third of the way from the bottom.
-When photographing people & animals, make sure the eyes are noticeable & in focus—even if other parts of them aren’t. The eyes bring them to life.
