opportunity: 10-word story

It may be apocryphal, but the story goes that Ernest Hemingway won a
bet by writing a short story that ran fewer than ten words. One
version of the story places the bet at the famed Algonquin "round
table." Whether true or not, there is an actual bet-winning short
story attributed to Hemingway:For sale. Baby Shoes. Never worn. You
have to admit it's pretty good. It builds, and a whole world of
background and emotion lurks beneath those words. We would like to make
a similar bet with you. Write a great short story in ten words or
fewer. (You may use a title, but that goes into the word count.)
Submit it to our contest. Entry is free. Winner of the bet gets a free
Gotham ten-week workshop.Deadline to submit is April 23, 2013.For
competition rules and an online entry form, visit:
writingclasses.com/tenwordstory.

opportunity: American Revolution romance novels

A message from editor Jamie Wilson:

Over the course of a decade, everything changed in America. Men and
women of all races and backgrounds fought and suffered and died for an
ideal: freedom. Starting with events around the Boston Tea Party in
1773 through the Philadelphia Convention in 1787, their blood and
sacrifices gave birth to a new nation. Their revolution supporting a
cause, not a king, changed the nature of revolutions. And their
children and grandchildren transformed the world.

Liberty Island is proud to announce the opening of a new line of
historical romance set during these years. We are looking for books
with strong, passionate female leads and heroic heroes who are
dedicated to the cause of liberty.

. Must be set at least partially in the Thirteen Colonies or the
newly-formed United States.
. Must be set during the years 1773-1787, preferably earlier on this
timeline
. Accurate history - do your research!
. Approximately 50,000 words of tight prose
. Low to moderate sensuality that moves the story forward.

Beyond these parameters, the sky is the limit. We are open to creative
ideas, unique storylines, and crossed genres. New writers and indy
writers are strongly encouraged to submit. Liberty Island pays an
advance plus royalty commensurate with industry standards.

Please email your story arc, a one-page synopsis, and any publishing
history (including independently published works) to Jamie Wilson,
senior editor at Liberty Island Press, at kywrite@gmail.com with the
email header "LI Submission: Historical Romance".

more on the Aikman Award for aspiring writers

I mentioned the Aikman Award earlier. Here it is again with more info.

The Aikman Award is meant to create a movement among younger,
Christian writers.

The passion behind this contest is fuelled by Dr. David Aikman. After
he was hired with Time Magazine in the 1970s, he covered several
historical events. He remembers the atrocities when he covered the war
in Indochina, watched people worship in a Cambodian Christian Church
knowing they would be killed for it and witnessed the horror of the
Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989. Although he already held a
Christian worldview upon the launch of his career, by the end of it,
the wisdom and value of his faith was only reaffirmed.

He heard several Christian testimonials throughout his career--stories
that were about people connecting with God in a great variety of
circumstances. The 1970s and 1980s had several people sharing their
hearts, but then people stopped in. Dr. David Aikman feels that it's
important for Christians to continue talking about what God is doing
today. In partnership with Guildford Media Ltd., this contest is meant
to inspire people who want to write about how God has transformed a
life or community's, but haven't had the chance to do so.

While most writing contests consider rewarding a completed work of
journalism, the David Aikman Award is providing a paid opportunity
where the writer will be financially supported while writing their
nonfiction story. Four prizes will be awarded with the Grand Prize
being $20,000! There is also the possibility of publication.

The winner has an entire year to complete their book and will be
announced on October 1, 2013

To qualify, the applicants need to be between 18 and 35 years of age
and reside in Canada, the US, the UK or the Republic of Ireland.

For more information, or if you would like to arrange an interview
with David Aikman, please contact our Media Contact: Nico Bauman at
david@aikmanaward.com

doesn't work, copy and paste it into your search engine.)
