novelettes, novellas, poetry, flash fiction: Ancient Paths

The Christian literary magazine Ancient Paths is seeking long stories,
novellas, poetry, and flash fiction. See below and on their website,
http://www.editorskylar.com/magazine/table.html.

The publisher of Ancient Paths literary magazine is currently seeking
fiction of 8,000 - 35,000 words for Stand in the Ways, a new anthology
of spiritual novelettes and novellas. All genres will be considered,
but literary fiction, mainstream fiction, social science fiction, and
character-driven romances will likely receive preference.
Spiritual themes may be explicit or implicit and might include topics
such as redemption, forgiveness, doubt, faith, reconciliation,
spiritual growth, or spiritual struggle. Do not be didactic,
simplistic, or preachy. We are not looking for formulaic inspirational
fiction, but rather fiction with rich, nuanced spiritual themes,
believable stories, and interesting characters.
QUERY FIRST to the editor, Skylar Burris, at ssburris@cox.net. Be sure
to include all of the following in your query:
(1) Your name, e-mail address, and mailing address.
(2) A brief synopsis of your novella, not to exceed 250 words (think
cover blurb text). Include title, genre, and total word count.
(3) If you work has been previously published, note when and where it
appeared. Previously published works may be considered provided your
novella is not currently available online anywhere. Also indicate
whether or not your work is a simultaneous submission.
(4) The first 1,500 words of your novella as a Word or RTF attachment.
Use the e-mail subject heading "Fiction Query (Title of your Novelette
or Novella)."
Each author selected for inclusion in the anthology will be paid
one-half cent per word up to a maximum of $100 and one free copy of
the print edition. The publisher obtains nonexclusive print and
electronic (e-book) rights, and you are free to republish your work
elsewhere.
Poetry
Ancient Paths is currently considering submissions of poetry of up to
35 lines for online publication on its Facebook page. Poems may be
rhymed or unrhymed, free verse or formal. Payment for publication is
one free copy of a past issue of Ancient Paths (#14) and a $2 discount
(if desired) on Issue #17. (No purchase is required for publication.)
Poets grant the publisher one-time, nonexclusive electronic rights,
and they are free to republish their work elsewhere at anytime.
Send your poem pasted directly in the body of an e-mail to
ssburris@cox.net. Please indicate if your work has been previously
published and, if so, when and where. Previously published works are
acceptable provided you retain all rights. Use the subject heading "AP
Online Poetry Submission."
All poems should have a spiritual theme or religious figures (for
instance, you can write a poem about a Bible character or a saint).
Themes may be explicit or implicit and might include such subjects as
sin, redemption, forgiveness, doubt, faith, spiritual growth, or
spiritual struggle, to name but a few.
Flash Fiction
Ancient Paths is currently considering submissions of flash fiction of
up to 400 words for online publication on its Facebook page. Payment
for publication is one free copy of a past printed issue of Ancient
Paths (#14) and a $2 discount (if desired) on Issue #17. (No purchase
is required for publication.) Authors grant the publisher one-time,
nonexclusive electronic rights, and they are free to republish their
work elsewhere at anytime.
Send your flash fiction piece pasted directly in the body of an e-mail
to ssburris@cox.net. Please indicate if your work has been previously
published and, if so, when and where. Previously published works are
acceptable provided you retain all rights. Use the subject heading "AP
Online Flash Fiction Submission."
All works should have a spiritual theme. Themes may be explicit or
implicit and might include such subjects as sin, redemption,
forgiveness, doubt, faith, spiritual growth, or spiritual struggle, to
name but a few.

Ancient Paths is not currently seeking art work, though our needs may
change. "Like" Ancient Paths on Facebook to follow future submission
needs.

way after November 25, 2012 AD will not be read. Instead, we have
switched to using Submittable, a system that will not only allow us to

track the status of their pieces more easily, not just those submitted

'The Jerusalem Puzzle' contest: Authonomy

You need to be a member of Authonomy to participate in the following
contest. If you're interested, go here to register:
http://authonomy.com/. Here's the contest:

'The Jerusalem Puzzle' Competition - your chance to be published
alongside
one of HarperCollins' most exciting new writers

We're looking for three talented authonomy authors whose short stories
will
be published in a special limited edition epub of 'The Jerusalem
Puzzle',
the second novel from Laurence O'Bryan.

This is an amazing opportunity for you to showcase your talent to
Laurence's audience. Moreover, the winning authors will be able to add
their social media details so that readers can discover more about
their
writing.

All you have to do is read the second chapter of 'The Jerusalem
Puzzle'.
Then, in no more than 500 words, tell us where you would take the
story
next - this can be in the form of a synopsis, or the opening of the
next
chapter.

The ten best entries will be given the chance to submit short stories
for
consideration. They will also get advanced ring-bound book proofs of
'The
Jerusalem Puzzle'.

At the start of December, three overall winners will be selected to be
published in the special edition Jerusalem Puzzle e-book next June.

If that wasn't enough, all these short stories will also be considered
for
full publication by HarperCollins editor. So what are you waiting for?
Get
reading, authonomites!

The second chapter is on the blog now:
http://harpercollinsnews.co.uk/go.asp?/bCOL002/q3EOZV8F/xLDP9W8F

Send your entries to yourauthonomy@harpercollins.co.uk by midnight GMT
on

seeking conservative-leaning books to review: Jamie Wilson

Jamie Wilson writes:

I'm looking for conservative-leaning books to review for my
website - the Cold Mountain books would probably qualify, for
instance. They don't need to be overtly political, and in fact I
would prefer that they NOT be political. They do have to be books
conservatives would love - books that uphold conservative values like
strong marriages and families, traditional American ideals, heroism,
self-sacrifice, etc. Most importantly, they have to be good stories,
not political screeds.

I've been fortunate in finding a few, but I really need to line up
more. I will only review books I can recommend wholeheartedly to my
readers (which means I have the unfortunate and painful task today of
telling one writer I can't put her review on my site, but I'll review
for other places - not ready for prime-time, to be honest, and I
really like the story too!)

Any suggestions? E-format review copies are a huge plus. And feel
free to spread this solicitation around.

critique groups

I'm the moderator of a Christian critique group called ReVision. You
need to belong to The Word Guild in order to join ReVision. The Word
Guild is an association of Canadian writers, editors, librarians, etc.
who are Christian. It costs about $90 or about $130 to join as a new
member, depending on the category of membership you fit into.

Regarding non-specifically Christian critique groups, I like Internet
Writers Workshop. Within it are various groups including one
specifically for novels, one for children's writers, one for short
stories, etc. It's free to join though there are quite a few rules,
not that hard to follow once you catch onto them. Other pretty good
critique groups are YouWriteOn and Scribophile. They're also free to
join and again there are quite a few rules. They don't give you as
many critiques as quickly. When I post something to my Internet
Writers Workshop group, I usually get about six crits within two weeks
or so. Of course members expect you to critique their stuff in return.
Otherwise they may not continue critiquing you. That's only fair.

writing a romance novel

I'm not a romance writer myself but this might interest some of you.

Calling All Romance Readers - And Writers

Deep in the heart of every person who loves a good romance novel is
the desire to write one of her own. But the process of writing a novel can
seem daunting, not to mention the steps to get published. Is there a formula
to the plot of a romance novel? How long should it be? Do I need an agent?
How do I submit my manuscript to a publisher? Okay, so I'm published, but
now what? These questions and more will be answered by a panel of experts:
romance writers themselves in a special FREE online event presented by
Crimson Romance. Attend On Writing Romance: Getting to the Heart of Creating
a Romance Novel and join Leigh Michaels, author of On Writing Romance;
Jennifer Lawler, Imprint Manager of Crimson Romance; Kristina Knight, author
of What a Texas Girl Wants; and Karen Sue Burns, author of In Hot Pursuit,
for a FREE webinar that will discuss writing and publishing a successful
romance novel from start to finish The. To attend, simply register online at the link below:  https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/813461089

sanitized view of Christian life: Rachel Held Evans

Interesting article by Rachel Held Evans on the sanitized view of Christian life that Christian bookstores seem to promote. She says in part: "the minute we try to codify these messy Christian lives that we live, the minute we try to sanitize and apologize for them, we lose not only our relevance, but our soul. We don’t have to be unnecessarily crass to speak the truth, but we have to be honest. We have to be real." Here's the link. If clicking it doesn't work, block it and paste into your browser.

torn between titles & endings for your novel?

Are you casting about for the right title for your novel? Torn between various possible endings? You're not alone. Ernest Hemingway did that too, according to a recent New York Times article. His wartime novel A FAREWELL TO ARMS is about to be republished with 39 of the endings he wrote before he decided on one. Here's the article:

Imago Dei/ image of God

Imago Dei is a collection of the best poems published in the journal Christianity and Literature over the past 60 years. They ask big questions: Why do we exist? Who is God? Where do we find God? What does the Incarnation mean? When does God speak to us, and why is God silent? The poets have in common an awareness of the Imago Dei embedded in human nature. More about the book is at the Abilene Christian University Press web site: http://acupressbooks.com/. [Click Search Books and type in the title.] The press is open to submissions of nonfiction Christian books. [On the same web site, click Contact Us, then Submissions.]

wonderful biog & writing opportunity: Pure Francis

I love the following biog from the Pure Francis website. It's a spoof, right? But the Pure Francis online journal evidently isn't. It's open to submissions of poetry, short prose, and visual art. No payment but hey, it's a publishing credit if they accept your stuff. Here's the link to submissions guidelines: http://www.purefrancis.org/pure_francis/submission-guidelines.html

Pure Francis, the man, was born under mysterious conditions on a tramp steamer off the coast of Finland.  He stands 2 feet, 6 inches tall and counts fencing, origami, and collecting REO Speedwagon bootlegs amongst his vast array of hobbies.  He founded the print version of Pure Francis in May, 1908.  It folded in June, 1908.

Hachette Book Group has been talking about harnessing Facebook as a way for readers to sample and share books. Wednesday the company launched their ChapterShare Facebook app. The app lets authors themselves as well as HBG staff post chapters onto Facebook pages from forthcoming books. Facebook friends can read and share the samples, as well as pre-order titles. HBG ceo Ken Michaels notes in the announcement, "…apps like ChapterShare allow us to connect directly with consumers. Publishers need to become application developers in order to connect writers and readers more closely…"

Ajax Mine & Kamloops

The south end of our lovely city, Kamloops, is the proposed site for the KGHM Ajax Mine [open-pit copper and gold mine]. Part of it would be within city limits. My husband, atmospheric physicist Robert Schemenauer, has addressed city council and some local media about weather-related concerns associated with locating a mine so close to where 90,000 people live. These concerns include haze causing reduced sunshine and air quality. His interview with CFJC-TV is at http//cfjctv.com/ [click link, find search box at upper right, and type in Ajax Weather Concerns].

Among other mine-related concerns are its potential impacts on:
-health [from breathing dust, toxic aerosols, etc.]
-noise levels [blasting is loud]
-ecosystems and wildlife [forests, grasslands, lakes, etc.]
-Kamloops' reputation as a pleasant place to live, work, play, and retire
-Kamloops' reputation as Canada's Tournament Capital
-tourism in general
-real estate values
-the economy
If you have questions, feedback, or expertise relating to these concerns, I'd encourage you to share them with government, media, and/or the mining company. Following is some contact information.
