Poetry Contest for Canadian Youth

There are two age categories, junior (grades 7-9) and senior (grades

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: LITERARY REVIEW OF CANADA (LRC)

We're changing up our poetry section for 2013, with each issue to
feature poems that share a common form or theme. During the months
devoted to a given form, the subjects will vary, and vice versa. Below
is our 2013 publication calendar to help guide submissions. As always,
we welcome unsolicited, unpublished, original submissions, provided
that they fit one of the categories outlined in this schedule:



a.. January/February: sonnets
b.. March: poems from the margins, e.g. pieces from/about our
prisons, reserves, North, rural areas, etc.
c.. April: short poems, of less than 50 words - consider haikus,
tankas, rubaiyats, tweet-poems, triolets, and other short styles
d.. May: poems on the elements, e.g. fire, earth, water, air, wood,
etc.
e.. June: villanelles
f.. July/August: ekphrastic poetry, i.e. pieces inspired by other
art forms (visual, film, music, etc.)
g.. September: prose poems
h.. October: poems inspired by family
i.. November: ghazals
j.. December: poems inspired by food


Please note that there are two reading periods: 1) May 1 to December
5, 2012 for publication January-June 2013 and 2) beginning May 1, 2013
for publication July/August-December 2013. Please include the month in
which you would like your work to be read in the subject line of any

sessions:

Workshops, Panels, Conversations, Academic-type presentations.

We will have a limited number of slots for 10-minute readings included
in the program.

These will be dedicated to poets who have new books this year.
Everyone else will be encouraged to read at one of the two open mics.

Please let us know if you have a new book and would like a 10-minute
slot.

Some new developments this year: preregistration will be required,
and attendance will be limited to 120 participants; only two events
will occur at a time; there may be opportunities for a mentoring
conference with a well-known poet for a small additional fee.

for Developing Writers
$2,500 PRIZE



The Writers' Union of Canada is pleased to announce that submissions
are being accepted until March 1, 2013 for the 20th Annual Short Prose
Competition for Developing Writers. The winning entry will be the best
Canadian work of up to 2,500 words in the English language, fiction or
non-fiction, written by an unpublished author.



PRIZE



$2,500 for the winning entry, and the entries of the winner and
finalists will be submitted to three Canadian magazines.



JURY



Writers Ami McKay, Rosemary Nixon, and Mark A. Rayner will serve as
the jury.



ELIGIBILITY



This competition is open to all Canadian citizens and landed
immigrants who have not had a book published by a commercial or
university press in any genre and who do not currently have a contract
with a book publisher. Original and unpublished (English language)
fiction or non-fiction is eligible.



HOW TO SUBMIT ENTRIES:



· Entries should be typed, double-spaced, in a clear
twelve-point font, and the pages numbered on 8.5 x 11 paper, not
stapled.

· Submissions will be accepted in hardcopy only.

· Include a separate cover letter with title of story, full
name, address, phone number, email address, word count, and number of
pages of entry.

· Please type the name of entrant and the title of entry on
each numbered page. This is not a blind competition.

· Make cheque or money order payable to The Writers' Union of
Canada. Multiple entries can be submitted together and fees can be
added and paid with one cheque or money order, $29 per entry.

· Entries must be postmarked by March 1, 2013 to be eligible.

· Mail entries to: SPC Competition, The Writers' Union of
Canada, 90 Richmond Street East, Suite 200, Toronto, ON M5C 1P1.



Results will be posted at www.writersunion.ca in May 2013. Manuscripts

new UK Christian imprint: Lion Fiction

Interesting announcement from Publisher's Lunch:

In the UK, Christian publisher Lion Hudson will publish crime and
women's fiction aimed at a broader audience through a new imprint,
Lion Fiction, set to launch in spring 2013. Lion Fiction aims to
publish up to 24 titles annually, selling them through both the
general and specialist Christian markets.

FaithWriters contest for kids, deadline Dec 12, 2012

FAITHWRITERS ANNOUNCES A NEW CONTEST FOR KIDS!


We are excited to announce The New Year Contest: A Fresh Start-a
writing contest with a cash prize and publication of the winning
entries for FaithWriter Kids!

The theme for the entries should be about starting fresh. The entry
can be about the New Year holiday, or about someone who is starting
again or making changes in their life. Entries will be accepted
December 1st through December 12th, 2012. Open to any genre-a fiction
story, true story, poem, devotional-anything you want as long as it
has a fresh start theme. The word count needs to be between 150 and
750 words.

The contest will be divided into two age groups: 7-10 and 11-14.
Judges will choose a first and second place winner from each group.
First place winners will receive a gift certificate for $15 and
publication in the FaithWriters' magazine in January 2013, and second
place winners will receive a gift certificate for $10. Winners will be
contacted and announced on the website at least by January 1st, 2013.

Submissions should be made by posting your story as an article on the
kids' website with the subject "New Year Contest: [title]." A link to
the story should be emailed to Amy at the email address:
contact@sparrowsflight.net.

The entries will be judged on the following points: How creative,
unique, and memorable is this entry? How well-written is this entry?
Does it have a strong beginning and ending? Did the author communicate
the point they wanted to make to the reader?

This is a wonderful opportunity for young writers!

writing personal stories: Anne Konrad Dyck

My friend Anne Konrad Dyck of Toronto is excellent at writing personal
stories in a way readers can relate to. One example is her memoir of a
Mennonite childhood, The Blue Jar. It's a Canadian classic. More
recently, University of Toronto Press published her book Red Quarter
Moon: A Search for Family in the Shadow of Stalin. The latest issue of
the Canadian Mennonite has a couple of interesting articles about
